This reproduction by Yves Melcher, one of Mourlot's master printer who had worked with Laurencin at the Mourlot Studio in the 1930's, is of the painting by Marie Laurencin entitled "Mother and Child" from 1928. The original painting was purchased by, and is now located in the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum.
Born out of wedlock, Marie Laurencin’s Creole mother ensured that she had a middle-class education. She, however, chose to devote herself to art and enrolled in the Ecole de Manufacture de Sèvres (a state-run porcelain factory), where she learned to paint on porcelain.
