Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh

(1853-1890) Dutch

A monumental Post-Impressionist painter, van Gogh was a Dutch artist whose work helped lay the foundations of modern art. He did not begin painting until his late twenties, and he completed many of his best-known works in the last two years of his life. He developed a distinctive style that became fully realized during his stay in the South of France in 1888; impassioned brushstrokes full of movement and texture, his style is lyrical, emotional, and imaginative. Though he remained virtually unknown throughout his life, he left a lasting impact on the world of art.
