Le Paquet de Tabac which was painted in 1916, is a great example of the Cubism that Gris had developed by then. The segmented pictorial surface acquires impressive plastic coherence, in which the painter combines colour, planes and linear shapes in compositions that define his personal Cubist style, based on constructive rigor that is almost mathematical and in the use of a refined chromatism.
It was published by Heinz Berggruen in 1973. Ed. 750. The original painting is still in a private collection.
