This poster was produced for a museum exhibition of major contemporary artists of the time at the Musée du Gemmail in Tours, France in 1964. The work chosen to promote the exhibit is "Seated Harlequin", a painting from 1923. It was deftly translated into lithography by Mourlot Master Printer, Henri Deschamps, with the supervision and approval from Pablo Picasso.
The Italian characters known as zanni, or servants, were a part of Stravinsky's opera for the Ballet Russes, but of all of them, Harlequin is the smarter zanno. Picasso’s depictions of Harlequin do not show a theatrical Harlequin. Picasso’s Harlequins are off-stage and the artist’s depictions are portraits of distinguished and intelligent individuals. Another version is illustrated in the catalog for a show in Lausanne, Switzerland, however it is still referenced in the index. Ref. Czwiklitzer # 238 A. Ed. 1,000
