This original lithographic poster was designed by well known French artist Bernard Buffet for an exhibition of paintings inspired by a recent trip to the Netherlands. This artist that became so successful, and so early in his carrer, was also controversial. Because of that popularity with the public, many critics and cultural elites began to avoid him. Yet, even with a simple and romantic subject such as this windmill in a Dutch landscape, his deep black lines are instantly recognizable.
While many critics have long been forgotten, Bernard Buffet remains, twenty years after his death, one of the most important artist of the XXth century. His style was often referred to as precursor to the pop art movement of the sixties.
