This original lithographic poster was created after a previous lithograph by famous French artist Bernard Buffet for a painting exhibition in 1969 at the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar, France. Printed at Mourlot and faithfully reproduced by Charles Sorlier in 1961 originally, this image features the crucifixion of Christ.

Bernard Buffet's paintings reveal a dark politic and a strong respect for art history, especially French painters like Eugène Delacroix and Antoine-Jean Gros whose work had historical themes.

At the age of thirty in 1958, Bernard Buffet was one of the most famous painters in France. Because of his financial success, Bernard Buffet’s popularity was attacked by the left-leaning cultural pundits of the time. Refusing to abide with the image of a bohemian artist, his status decreased and state support for his work mostly vanished until his death. However, there has been a tremendous resurgence of interest in his work, especially since his retrospective at the Paris Museum of Modern Art in 2017.
