This poster was designed for a show of Juan Gris paintings at the Berggruen Gallery in honor of the publishing of the catalog raisonné of the artist's work. The catalog was written and compiled by the famous British Art historian and collector, Douglas Cooper. It was published by Heinz Berggruen in 1977. Ed. 750.
Violin and Guitar which was painted in 1913, is a perfect example of the Cubism that Gris is engaged in during this period. The canvas is divided into vertical sections and he places in each of them some elements that, painted with total realism, are perfectly recognizable. The original painting was bequeathed by Douglas Cooper to the Reina Sofia Museum in 1985 upon his death in 1984.
