This 1969 lithographic poster was printed for an exhibition of works by highly influential Norwegian Expressionist Edvard Munch. The exhibit, titled Lithographs Etchings Woodcuts, was presented at the Los Angeles Museum of Art in January 1969. Munch’s 1902 original lithograph The Sin (Woman with Red Hair and Green Eyes) Ref. Schliefer No. 142; Woll, No. 198, was chosen to promote the show.
The work reproduced is very representative of the haunting and melancholic feelings found in Munch's works. Printmaking was also an essential component of Munch's art following his introduction to the graphic media in 1894. With the capacity to produce multiple works from a single plate, stone, or woodblock, printmaking served to expand the accessibility of the artist’s themes to the general public and to provide income.
